High Tolerance for Risk

The dictionary defines risk as "the possibility of suffering harm or loss." We see the upside. When correctly analyzed, risk becomes opportunity. When correctly handled, opportunity becomes reward.

Individual and corporate clients wronged by others often lack the means to pursue justice, or the willingness to take the risk. This has always been true. In 1649, John Warr described his fellow citizens "lost in the law... So many are the references, orders and appeals that it were better for us to sit down by the loss than to seek for relief. The price of right is too high for a poor man."

Poor or not, that price can be considerable. Pursuing a complicated lawsuit the traditional way will cost a small fortune in hourly legal fees, payments for expert witnesses and all the other costs of litigation. The other side will hire their own high-priced lawyers and spare no expense. And there's no guarantee that, once you've spent all your money, the case will be won. No wonder businesses and people throw up their hands and give up.

We have a better way. Let us take the risk with you. Pay a fraction of the recovery if you win, pay nothing if you lose. Since we can finance the case and bear the risk, we'll have every incentive to cut through the paper wars and prepare the case for trial as rapidly and efficiently as possible. Your interests are ours. Your case is an asset, often the most valuable one you have. Nurturing that asset and preparing your case for trial will take months of our lives and vast resources. But we do it because we see the upside -- the potential to maximize your asset.

We're comfortable taking the risk because we have the experience to evaluate it, the resources to handle it, and the know-how to win. But we're also not afraid to lose. You can't be if your business is profiting from risk. In an article profiling the best plaintiffs' lawyers in America, National Law Journal noted that about us, "'A lot of people are concerned about their reputation,' offered [one] defense lawyer who has opposed Watts in court. 'And if they lose a case, how that's going to affect their reputation. Watts is not afraid to lose.' Later, Watts added, 'I will try a lawsuit, win, lose or draw. And that scares the hell out of them.'"

If you have a valuable claim, but one you can't be certain of winning in court, don't take the risk of finding out it's worth nothing. Don't empty your wallet in legal fees and litigation costs only to come away empty-handed.

Call us. We'll level the playing field. We'll take the risk with you.
