The Watts Philosophy

Mikal Watts founded his own firm in 1997 with $10,000 in the bank. In only eight years, the firm has blazed a trail to the front of some of the most complex and cutting edge litigation in America. We've been named by the National Law Journal to its "Hot List" of the top 25 plaintiffs' firms in the United States for the last three years in a row.

How? Easy. The firm reflects the relentless drive of its namesake, who graduated from the University of Texas Law School at 21. After serving as law clerk to the Chief Justice of Texas' highest court, Watts joined an established firm and quickly became a partner -- but he was frustrated by how few cases moved to trial. He created Watts Law Firm to do things differently.

The vision that cases should speed to trial or settlement, that lean and creative advocacy beats needless overlawyering, that the firm would be willing and able to try any case, anytime, anywhere, has bred results. Whether helping to force the recall of millions of Firestone tires, recovering a substantial award for the founder of a nationwide securities firm after his partners kicked him out and auctioned off his company, or winning first-in-the-nation pharmaceutical trials, the firm doesn't let up.

And that has led to recognition. In naming Watts its "Impact Player of the Year" in 2002, Texas Lawyer said he "doesn't even know where the brake pedal is."National Law Journal twice named him to its prestigious list of the 40 best lawyers in America under 40, saying he and the others on the list are "expected to lead the nation's litigation bar for years to come," and that Watts is "one of the best of any age for plaintiffs." For three years in a row, Texas Monthly has named Watts one of the top 100 lawyers in Texas.

Practicing with Watts are 26 lawyers who share the firm's passion. They graduated from top law schools like Stanford, Harvard, Michigan and the University of Texas. They clerked for federal and state trial and appellate judges. They came from the best and largest defense firms, companies, prosecutors' offices and other plaintiffs' firms. Together, they've tried hundreds of lawsuits in state and federal courts and argued innumerable appeals. They didn't come to push paper -- they came to win cases for clients as efficiently and quickly as possible.
